Erin Brockovich, whose relentless advocacy led to a landmark $333 million settlement against PG&E in the 1990s, has now turned her attention to the burgeoning world of artificial intelligence and its infrastructure. She is spearheading a new initiative to monitor and document the impact of AI data center developments on local communities and the environment. Brockovich is actively calling on residents nationwide to submit any issues or concerns they are experiencing due to these facilities.
A dedicated website has been established for this purpose, and it has quickly become a repository for public grievances. To date, more than 2,700 reports have been submitted from various locations across the United States. These reports highlight a wide array of problems, including excessive noise, increased traffic, strain on local utility grids, potential water contamination, and other environmental disruptions. Many communities are expressing worries about the sheer scale and rapid expansion of data centers, which require vast amounts of power and cooling, often in residential or ecologically sensitive areas. Brockovich's involvement brings a significant level of visibility and a proven track record of holding powerful corporations accountable, suggesting that the concerns of these communities regarding the unchecked growth of AI infrastructure will receive serious scrutiny.
