My Week with the Galaxy S26 and DeX, Ditching My Laptop

In an increasingly mobile world, the line between smartphones and computers continues to blur. With powerful flagship phones boasting desktop-class processors, the idea of replacing a laptop with a smartphone becomes less outlandish. I put this theory to the test by exclusively using a Samsung Galaxy S26 paired with its DeX environment for a full week, completely sidelining my trusty laptop.

My initial expectations were mixed, anticipating a frustrating compromise. However, the reality was surprisingly positive. DeX, Samsung's desktop-like interface for its flagship devices, has matured significantly. Connecting the S26 to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse transformed it into a surprisingly capable workstation. Multitasking was far more fluid than expected, with multiple apps running side-by-side in resizable windows, mimicking a traditional desktop experience quite effectively.

For everyday tasks such as email, web browsing, document editing, and even light image manipulation, DeX handled everything gracefully. The integration with Android apps meant I had access to a vast ecosystem of tools, many of which are now optimized for larger screens. While it couldn't fully replace a high-end workstation for intensive video editing or demanding gaming, for the average user, DeX proved to be a compelling alternative.

The convenience of having a single device that switches between phone and desktop mode seamlessly was a genuine revelation. Moving from a call on the go to a full desktop setup at my desk without transferring files or syncing data felt incredibly efficient. This experiment highlighted that DeX isn't just a niche feature anymore; it's evolving into a genuinely viable option for those looking to simplify their tech setup and perhaps, even ditch their secondary computing device.
